Arabs found among hostage takers

Look away. This post is not happening. The real problem is Osama bin Laden. Al Qaeda is a small organization. Let's send special forces to take them out. BBC:

....20 hostage-takers had died in exchanges of fire with troops, at least nine of them Arabs.
Terrorists are linked together by common ideology, not by the boundaries of organizations. Al Qaeda, Hamas, the KLA, the Iranian government, and Chechens alll share a vision of the future worldwide Islamic state. That vision is the enemy. Hat tip: LGF

Al Khobar Slimeball Captured

Saudi Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz Bin Ahmad al-Muqrran is in custody. Update: CNN

The recently captured militant came to the attention of Saudi authorities after the atttack in al-Khobar. They said he was identified as one who provided information and support for the four men who participated in the attack.

Twenty-two people died in al-Khobar in a hostage standoff that began May 29, ending with Saudi troops storming the residential compound where militants had taken more than 200 people hostage.

What was the name of the American who died in this incident? It was not Paul Johnson, who died on Jun 13. Anyone?

French Hostages Freed

Reuters:

Islamic militants in Iraq have handed over two French hostages to another guerrilla group opposed to their kidnap and murder, the editor of one of the reporters held captive says.

As hopes rose that Georges Malbrunot and Christian Chesnot could be released as soon as Friday, the Muslim day of prayer, French Foreign Minister Michel Barnier told reporters he understood the pair were "alive and getting good treatment".

Le Figaro editor Jean de Belot said on France Info radio on Thursday: "The latest information is that Christian Chesnot and Georges Malbrunot have been handed over by the Islamic Army in Iraq to an Iraqi Sunni guerrilla group... an opposition that we know for a few days now has been in favour of the release of the hostages."

Anger/irrational/irresponsible mode on:

What????!!!!??? Are you fu**ing kidding me? 31 other hostages are dead! 31!!!! And two fu**ing frog journalists are threatened with death and the whole fu**ing Islamic world rises up to their defense? Just last night three Turkish hostages were murdered. Three...yesterday!!! The day before that TWELVE!!! You sons of whores in the Islamic world. You bastards. Where were you when Kim Sun-Il begged for his life? When Enzo Baldoni was awaiting his certain death sentence, why were you not out protesting for his release? For a month 12 Nepalese hostages plead for their lives, where were you? You bastards. You bloody bastards. Damn you for this. Damn you to hell.

Possible Terrorist Shot in Nashville

If he turns out to be a terrorist then hoooray for our side. If he turns out to be just a lunatic, shame on us for racial profiling. It's the classic error question. In the face of uncertainty which risk is greater if it turns out you're wrong: the risk of missing a terrorist or the risk of unecessarily offending a group? Hmm, that's a toughie.

Newsday:

Authorities say the unusual behavior of a New York truck driver who was pulled over for speeding and then shot during a confrontation with a state trooper has prompted them to investigate possible terrorist ties.

French Hostages Still Alive

If Muslim advocacy groups are powerful enough to keep these guys alive, does the fact that 31 hostages died while they kept silent make them complicent in their murders? Isn't that, like, a crime.

Bloomberg.com:

Kidnappers in Iraq said they killed three Turkish hostages, al-Jazeera television news reported, showing a video of the three men kneeling on the ground before their captors.

Qatar-based al-Jazeera said it received the video from the Tawhid wal Jihad group showing the execution. The station didn't broadcast the killing. Tawhid wal Jihad means Unity and Holy War in Arabic. Groups demanding the withdrawal of foreign troops and businesses have kidnapped several foreigners working in Iraq. Some of the hostages have been killed.

Bodies found:
The slain bodies of two Turkish citizens and a third unidentified man were discovered in northern Iraq, police Maj. Sadoun Ahmed Matrud said Thursday.

It was not immediately clear when the three were killed, nor what they were doing in Iraq, he said. The bodies were found by a police patrol eight kilometres from the northern city of Samarra late Wednesday and were taken to a city hospital for an autopsy, Matrud said.

He said police found identification on two of the bodies that showed they were Turks, but nothing was discovered on the third body.

Where is Hamas pleading to save the lives of their fellow Muslim Turks? I think I'll go back to bed. Today is not looking very good.

Expect updates.

Bali bomber 'let out for coffee'

In related news, Ted Kaczynski spotted with John Ashcroft splitting an orignal glazed down at Krispy Kreme. Yeah, our 'allies' really hate the terrorists. News.com.au:

ONE OF the main Bali bombers has been let out of prison to have coffee at a popular shopping mall in central Jakarta, it was reported today.

Ali Imron, the so-called repentant bomber sentenced to life imprisonment for his part in the attacks which claimed more than 200 lives, was spotted having coffee at Starbucks with the director of Indonesian narcotics and drugs Brigadier-General Gorries Mere.

When challenged by journalists the pair and a number of black-clad armed police guards fled to a waiting car and sped off, Detik.com news said tonight.

"I walk often with Pak (Mr) Gorries," Ali Imron said in response to questions.

Seven Hostages Released

The good news:

Seven truck drivers from Egypt, Kenya and India held by militants in Iraq since July 21 have been released, Dubai-based al-Arabiya TV reported Wednesday.

Three Kenyans, three Indians and an Egyptian appeared in interviews with the al-Arabiya channel, looking in good mood and healthy. The seven hostages were kidnapped on July 21 by a group calling itself "Holders of the Black Banners" affiliated to a group called "Secret Islamic Army".

The bad news:
A £280,000 ransom payment today gained freedom for seven truck drivers held hostage in Iraq since July.

The men arrived at KuwaitÂ’s international airport after their company paid Iraqi militants the cash to secure their release.

The freed hostages – three Kenyans, three Indians and an Egyptian – were hugged and presented with flowers by executives and employees of the company they worked for, Kuwait Gulf Link Transport.

KGL chief executive officer, Said Dashti, said the men were freed after a team of company employees drove under armed guard to an unspecified location in Iraq where the drivers were being held to pay the ransom.

“The kidnappers were not trying to make a political statement, they were purely extortionists,” Dashti said.

Dashti said the kidnappers’ initial demands included a £4 million ransom, the release of prisoners held in the US military prison in Guantanamo and compensation for victims of coalition attacks in the western Iraqi city of Fallujah.

But the kidnappers lowered their demands as their negotiations with tribal and religious leaders and parties close to the company continued, Dashti added.

Asked if he thought paying ransom money will encourage more kidnappings and terrorism, Dashti said: “Yes, but I had no other choice, the drivers are human beings and were trying to save their lives.”

Hamas Strategery

Headline: Hamas appeals for French hostages

Between the Lines: The Palestinian Islamic militant group, Hamas, called on Tuesday for the release of two French journalists held hostage in Iraq, saying it could add to the isolation of Israel and the United States.

Sami Abu Zuhri, a spokesman for Hamas in the Gaza Strip, said that France has adopted “a positive stand,” over Iraq because it opposed the US-led war to topple Saddam Hussein.

Paris has also shown an “understanding position” toward the Palestinian cause, he said.

“Releasing the two French journalists would increase the isolation of hostile American and Israeli attitudes toward the Arab and Muslim nations, and would boost French support for our aspirations,” Abu Zuhri added.

Iraqi Spy Arrested in Chicago

Nope, no WMD found in his apartment. Also, if you are a lefty just remember that this post is not happening. Disregard what follows because, as we all know, there is no link between Saddam and terrorism. None.

CNN:

An Iraqi-born man who federal prosecutors say was a "sleeper agent" for Saddam Hussein's spy agency was arrested Monday for allegedly lying on his application to become a U.S. citizen....

The indictment concerns Latchin's 1998 application for citizenship. Asked to list any organizations to which he belonged, he failed to put down Saddam's Baath Party, according to the indictment.

He also did not list that he had been a member of the Iraqi Intelligence Service, the foreign intelligence arm of the Iraqi government, and said three overseas trips he made were vacations when in fact he met with his intelligence handler, according to the indictment. [more]

Captain Ed and Instapundit late on the scene....but, at least word is getting out.

12 Nepalese hostages have been executed. In the video released by the Army of Ansar al-Sunna, one hostage is seen beheaded with a knife as he struggles with his captors. The other 11 are seen lying down, and then one by one shot in the back of the head. Nepal is not a member of the Coalition Forces nor is it involved in any way in Iraq. The twelve came to Iraq to work, nothing more. The same group has threatened to kill two French hostages if the Chirac government, which opposed the invasion of Iraq, does not lift a ban on the Islamic head-scarf in schools. This is Islamic law:

We have carried out the sentence of God against 12 Nepalis who came from their country to fight the Muslims and to serve the Jews and the Christians...believing in Buddha as their God," said the statement by the military committee of the Army of Ansar al-Sunna.
Remember the words of the Quran:
Then, when the sacred months have passed, slay the idolaters wherever ye find them, and take them (captive), and besiege them, and prepare for them each ambush. But if they repent and establish worship and pay the poor-due, then leave their way free. Lo! Allah is forgiving, merciful" (Sura 9:5)
Pictures from the video can be found below. I will update the murdered hostages count as soon as I find the names of the Nepalese victims.

Jeff Quinton first notified me of the gruesome news.

Chris Short has the video, which is truly horrific.

Hostages Beg France to Surrender

frenchbeg.gif
News.co.au:

TWO French journalists held hostage by militants in Iraq today said a French ban on Islamic headscarves in schools would cost them their lives.

The pair were shown in a video broadcast by Al-Jazeera television urging the French Government to revoke the ban.

"I call on President (Jacques) Chirac and the French Government to show good will toward the Arab and Islamic worlds by revoking the ban on wearing the hijab immediately," said Mr Chesnot, speaking in English.

"I also urge all French citizens to demonstrate against this law and demand its annulment because it is unfair and wrong.

What do you do when the cheese-eating surrender monkeys actually have a good point?

David Hicks: Australian Taliban

You know what's sad? When you find out your son is a terrorist. First comes denial. After that, more denial. Then, you blame the US. After that, you look for meaning in your sons admission to being a terrorist by seeking out his Islamofascist friends. Then, you enter into some more denial. After that, you blame the US again. Finally, you get it right. Your son was just a misunderstood idealist fighting for his vision of the ideal world.

Unfortunately for you, your son's vision of the ideal world is one where women are not allowed to go to school, Jews and Christians are second-class citizens, blasphemers are stoned or beheaded, and American civillians are the intentional targets of murder.

I heard about this on NPR today. NPR Online:

Among the four suspects is 29-year-old David Hicks, an Australian who was captured by the Northern Alliance in Afghanistan in 2001. A convert to Islam, Hicks had gone to Pakistan to study the religion and ended up in Afghanistan, where he joined the Taliban. At the tribunal, Hicks pleaded not guilty to charges of attempted murder, conspiring to commit war crimes and aiding the enemy. His trial is set to start in January.

Terry Hicks, David's father, traveled to Cuba for the tribunal and had an emotional reunion with his son, whom he had not seen in five years. When Hicks was first transferred from Afghanistan to Guantanamo, his father decided to retrace David's steps through Pakistan and Afghanistan to try to find out what had happened along the way. A camera crew accompanied him and produced The President Versus David Hicks, a documentary that examines Hicks' tangled journey.

Terry Hicks speaks with NPR's Jennifer Ludden about the trip and what it taught him about his son. "He always tried to help out where he could," says Hicks, "in his own way, that was probably what he was doing."

If we weren't in Iraq, there would be no hostages....

...right? Wapo:

An Iraqi militant group has kidnapped two Frenchmen and given the French government 48 hours to end a ban on Muslim headscarves, Arabic television station Al Jazeera said on Saturday.
Now, is that the same France I'm thinking of? Because, to be honest, I'm a bit confused.

Of course, there would be less hostages if we had not invaded Iraq. But, that's just like saying "if people would stop going into the Bear's den, then the Bear would stop killing people in the Bear's den." Yup, true. But the bear is a bear, no matter where he is. We are in a war. We can let the enemy choose the battlefield, or we can choose it ourselves.
